12 The Wnrld CM Konnoke Thursday April I 1976 Two urge basin study completion WASHINGTON Two Roanokers tes tified today before the Public Works Sub committee of the House Committee on Appropriations urging the completion of the feasibility study of the Roanoke River upper basin George Pitzer a member of Roanoke flood plain study committee and Sam McGhee assistant city manager went before the committee at the request of Rep Caldwell Butler Butler said he was disappointed in the amount of funding for the Army Corps of Engineers study over the past two vcars The President's budget for fiscal 1977 in cludes S90000 for the study Pitzer told the subcommittee that in the past six years $138000 or 28 per cent of the study cost has been allocated to the project Pitzer said the $90000 proposed alloca tion was significant in that it is twice any amount previously allocated will bring the study to 47 per cent of completion at the end of the seventh he said At that rate Pitzer added the updated study would be completed by September 1980 almost 40 years after the initial study was completed Pitzer pointed out that Roanoke suf fered severe damages during a 1940 flood and again in 1972 in the backlash of Hurri cane Agnes He said the city has instituted flood plain zoning and building flood proofing requirements The city also has participat ed in flood insurance programs and is de veloping programs to establish additional park areas within the flood plain in an at tempt to stabilize or reduce the amount of potential future flood damage losses However he noted none of these mea sures will eliminate major losses which have been sustained previously and which Sam McGhee jgjrak wit Brat ill i fis will again be sustained if major flood con trol projects are not constructed "These construction projects cannot begin until completion of the upper basin Pitzer said Pitzer said his committee needs to see the construction of Rood control facilities occur as soon as possible but the study must be completed first this reason I urge you to acceler ate funding of the feasibility study of the Roanoke River upper Pitzer con cluded Lung course set The Roanoke region Virginia Lung As sociation in cooperation with Virginia West ern Community College will present a seminar on hospital and home care for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease April 20 at the Airport Holiday Inn from 8:30 a to 3:30 pm On the record MONDAY thru RIDAY Effective April 5 1976 A 745 like vto Hwy SJOA to Salem I0150A 235? 200? to Salem 1 9 00A II35A Il 23A II IDA to Roonokt to Salem 130P 640A to Salem 8 30A to Salem to RocnoH to Salem 1I 20A 12 35?
